Website: http://www.msh-paris.fr
Founded in 1960, on the initiative of Fernand Braudel, the MSH is dedicated
to the promotion and support of research in the social and human sciences.
It constitutes a platform for collaboration between institutions, researchers
and research groups on both a national and international scale. Its initiatives
are guided by its dedication to both the multidisciplinarity and internationalisation
of research. The MSH:
-invites, on average, 500 to 600 researchers per year (symposia not
included)
-establishes or receives, for a limited time, experimental groups seeking
to determine new directions and methods for research in the social sciences
-encourages dialogue among researchers through symposia, round tables,
workshops and the Internet.
-is responsible for the collection, publication and dissemination of
scientific information
-possesses a number of facilities and tools that it places at the disposal
of researchers (i.e. research library, a publishing house, scientific journals,
computer service, etc.)

Berlin für Sozialforschung GmbH (WZB)
(Social Science Research Centre, Berlin)
Reichpietschufer 50,
D-10785 Berlin
Germany
Website: http://www.wz-berlin.de
Founded in 1969 by representative of the political parties in the German Bundestag, the WZB conducts social science research in selected problem areas under the general theme of Developmental Trends, Problems of Adaptation, and Possibilities for Innovation in Modern Democratic Societies. The interlinkage of basic research and practical relevance is specifically expressed in the setting of tasks of the research units, groups and professorhips. The WZB is integrated into the wider contexts of scientific discussion and closely linked to scientific activity in the universities and other research institutions. It is characteristic of the largely empirical research work of the WZB, whose results are communicated to both scientific and policy-making communities, that in addition to its multidisciplinary approach it ahs an internationally comparative dimension. Facilities include library and documentation centre, press and information department.

The originality of the MSH in Nantes is that it brings together research teams and quality researchers in human and social sciences in compliance with three criteria :1) reference to a general theme : the “lien social” [social cohesion] ; 2) interdisciplinary practice : all forms of exchange and co-operations between the disciplines of the social and human sciences (law, historical records, sociology, history, geography, economics, linguistics or psychology), 3) international dimension : the MSH favours and encourages co-operation among researchers of all national origins and if possible on common projects (European and international comparisons). More general assignments are associated with these specific and priority aims: 1)hosting and accommodating numerous PhD students preparing their theses, 2) innovative documentary methods, 3)enhancing research via the facilitation of partnership between companies and public bodies, 4)propagating research findings through the organisation of public debates and conferences.

Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar (NIAS)
Meijboomlaan 1

Netherlands
Website: http://www.nias.knaw.nl
Founded in 1970, NIAS is an institute for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences. Each year, the Institute invites some 40 carefully selected scholars, both from within and outside the Netherlands, to its centre in Wassenaar, where they are given an opportunity to do research for a ten-month period. Fellows carry out their work either as individuals or as part of one of the research theme groups, which NIAS initiates every year. In addition, through its conference facilities, the Institute also functions as a meeting place for scientific programmes of a shorter duration and more specific character, such as workshops, seminars, summer schools and study centres.

Poland
Website: http://www.ifispan.waw.pl/english.html
The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences
(IFiS PAN) was established in October 1956. In 1991 the Institute began extensive
research of the systemic transformation in Poland against the background of
other East European and modern market societies. As concerns philosophical studies
(second main pillar of the Institute)., they are connected to the social
and political questions concerning modern world.
The IFiS PAN has a three part structure. First - the research division,
i.e. philosophical and sociological departments, research groups and workshops.
The research staff consists of 41 sociologists and 40 philosophers. Second -
the educational division which comprises: the (i) Graduate School for Social
Research offering doctoral studies, (ii) the Department of Sociology of Central
European University offering both master's and doctoral degrees' programs, (iii)
graduate studies in public relations. Third - Publishing House, i.e the IFiS
Publisher.
IFiS PAN also has its own research unit aimed at field work, namely Center for
Social Survey Research. The Center has its own nation-wide network of interviewers
and, more importantly, is the only academic research institution in Poland doing
both quantitative and qualitative sociological research. It offers a full scope
of services ranging from conceptualisation of research, through realisation,
control of collection of data, as well as coding and analyses. Another part
of its activity resides in methodological studies. Since 1995 IFiS publishes
the only methodological journal in Polish sociology, called ASK. Society, Problems,

Fundatia
Noua Europa – New Europe College (NEC)
Plantelor str.21
70309 Bucharest
Romania
The New Europe College is a small independent Romanian “centre of excellence” in the humanities and social sciences founded in 1994 by Professor Andrei Plesu (philosopher, art historian, writer, 1990-1991 Romanian Minister of Culture, 1997-1999 Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs). Focusing on research at the level of advanced studies, NEC is not, strictly speaking, a higher education institution, even though it has been consistently contributing to the advance of higher education in Romania in a number of ways, through the activities organised under its aegis. NEC proposes to offer young researcher in the humanities and social sciences from Romania and South-Eastern Europe working condition comparable to those of their Western colleagues, and an institutional context that encourages critical interdisciplinary debate. The activities organised by the NEC aim at synchronising research in Romania and in the region with international standards of scholarship, and at facilitating contacts of scholars from Romania and south-eastern Europe with centres of research throughout the world.

COLLEGIUM
BUDAPEST (CB)
Institute for Advanced Studies
Szentharomsag utca 2
H-1014 Budapest
Hungary
Website: http://www.colbud.hu
CB began its activities in 1992 and is the first Institute for Advanced
Study in CEE, hosting humanities, social and natural sciences. It aims
at rebuilding the international contacts of scholars and academic institutions
of this region by offering a common temporary work place for outstanding
scholars from the West and the former East.
Adapting the Princeton model, CB represents a new type of institute,
different both from universities and specialised research institutes. Its
main attraction is to offer its fellows temporary liberation from their
administrative and teaching obligations and allow them to fully concentrate
on their chosen research plan. The typical Fellowship is awarded for an
individual project lasting for an academic year (10 months) or a part of
it. All disciplines are eligible from the social sciences, humanities,
and theoretical natural sciences. The year-long common activities (weekly
fellow seminars and frequent public lectures and workshops) with this multidisciplinary
community stimulate methodological enrichment. Thematic Focus Groups are
also eligible, with a group of Fellows working on a common research topic,
and organising larger workshops. These groups are frequently convened by
the three Permanent Fellows of CB, representing its three major areas of
specialisation: Gábor Klaniczay (comparative social sciences and
humanities), János Kornai (economics and political science in post
socialist “transition”), and Eörs Szathmáry (theoretical biology).
In addition, the Board also considers Focus Group proposals from former
Fellows or scholars otherwise connected to CB. Focus Groups also involve
part-time Budapest (Associate) Fellows, who provide a link to local academic
community. Junior (pre- or post-doctoral) Fellowships are offered, principally
for young talents from CEE.
